CORIGLIANO
Not too far from the Ionian Coasts, facing
a beautiful panoramic position, is where one will come across
Corigliano, an art city known for the production
of excellent olive oil.
History
The centre derives its name from praedium corellianum, that
is the homestead/farm of Corellium,a landowner during Roman
Times. Its origin came about following the formation of a
rural home around the monastery of San Mauro, which was founded
by Basilian monks (VIII century).
It was a Saracen incursion, led by Al Quasim, the Emir of
Palermo, which pushed the inhabitants of San Mauro towards
higher areas (977) and to populating Corellianum. This fact
allowed it to become a true and proper Medieval village.
The centre was conquered by the Normans with Robert Guiscard
(1060), who decided to construct the Castle (1073).
A papal privilege appeared during the same era (January 1113),
which was granted to the S. Maria di Valle Giosafat Church
and cited by the name of Coriliani.
Under the Swabians, the fief passed hands to the Sanseverino
family (1192), and saw the arrival of a Hebrew/Jewish community
as well as that of a Franciscan one.
It then passed to the Angioinians (1266) and suffered besiegement
by Venceslao Sanseverino (1382) during the ambit of war between
the Durazzo family and Queen Giovanna I of Naples. The Castle
managed to resist and history repeated itself about two centuries
later when it suffered attack by the Turkish corsair Khayr
al-Din Barbarossa (1538).
A visit to the City
Corigliano is situated on hills dominated by its Castle
and offers cultural visits embellished by beautiful panoramic
views over the surrounding territory and the Ionian Sea.
Adjacent to the Ruffo Castle, one can visit the S. Pietro
Church which guards the New Odigitira icon depicting the Madonna
and Christ on the Cross.
The Mother Church, dedicated to S. Maria Maggiore, contains
works from the '600s and '700s. Other buildings which are
worthy of a visit: the Riformati Church and the Church of
the Cappuccini Convent.
On exiting the centre, one can visit the beautiful S. Antonio
Church, a Baroque building with a polychromed marble façade
and remarkable works of art in its interior.
Outside the City, it's possible to undertake visits to archaeological
sites dating back to Neolithic, Hellenistic and Roman Imperial
periods.
