GIOIOSA JONICA

Not too far from the Southern Jonic Coast and its Marine is where one will come across Gioiosa Jonica, situated almost leaning on a cliff of the Torbido Valley, a few kilometres from the Aspromonte National Park.

History

It is erroneously identified with the ancient Mistiae which was destroyed by the Saracens during the X century.
The centre was founded during the Angioinian era (XIV century) around a pre-existing fortress enclosed by walls.

During the Aragonese era (XV century), the centre enjoyed strong development, so much so that the presence of religious orders increased greatly, in turn allowing numerous churches to be erected.
The birth of new patrician classes followed the economic development, which during the XVI century, was expressed in the construction of many nobiliary buildings in Gioiosa.

A visit to the City

The Castle, dating back to the XIII century overlooks the City. One can enter through the Porta Falsa (XV century), which opens up along the Medieval City-walls. In the interior, numerous nobiliary buildings overlook the alleyways and steps, among which we would like to mention Palazzo Amaduri (XV century), seat of a historical Archive, with the SS Peter and Paul Chiesetta (1577) positioned next to it.

The San Rocco Church (1593) in Gioiosa is of great architectonic importance; this patron saint's feast day is celebrated on the last Sunday of August, and that of the San Giovanni Battista Matrix Church, close to the Castle from which one can enjoy a beautiful panoramic view over the surrounding City.

The Archaeological area of Naniglio is also interesting, with outcroppings dating back to the I-V century DB: a cistern, thermal springs and an imperial villa.
