SIMERI CRICHI

Simeri and Crichi are positioned along the ridge running between the Simeri and Alli valleys, not too distant from the Jonic Coasts on the outskirts of Catanzaro.

History

The territory was inhabited since the Bronze Age (3.500-1.200 BC), as attested by numerous finds which have emerged.

The foundation of Simeri instead, takes us to a period before the Saracen raids along the coasts of Calabria (IX century AD), which constricted the inhabitants to migrate towards the interior in search of more secure places to live. It's most likely that those leaving Trischene were the ones who founded the suburb of Simeri.

During the X century, the Byzantines had the Castle built, and in the following era, the fief was administered by the following families: Falloc, Ruffo and then the Centelles who lost their possessions through insubordination to the Spanish Crown.

The fief when to the Aragona d'Ayerbe family for almost a century (1482-1580) and then passed quickly from hand to hand to the following families: Borgia, Ravaschieri, De Fiore (1715), Barretta Gonzaga (1749), De Nobili from Catanzaro, who stayed in power until the end of feudalism (1806) brought about by Bonaparte, governor of the Reign of Naples.

A visit to the City

The remains of the Byzantine Castle (X century) are evocative and positioned solitarily on a small hill. The remains of the Collegiate, constructed during the Norman era and gravely damaged by earthquakes during 1704, 1783 and 1905, converse wonderfully with these traces of the past.

One should visit the San Fantino Church in Simeri; one of the few which resisted the earthquake of 1783.

A visit to the Addolorata Church (XIII century) in Crichi is also recommended. It preserves frescoes from the '700s in its interior and the San Nicola di Bari Church.

A few kilometres away is where one will come across Simeri Mare, a coastal centre, which in summer unveils its great seaside touristic vocation
