SABBIONETA
In the surrounding areas
of Mantova – about 35km along the main road to Parma
– you come across Sabbioneta, the so
called “Little Athens,” a perfect Renaissance
town centre which is still enclosed today by its original
walls and bastions, and purposely built in the second half
of the 1500’s by Vespasiano Gonzaga, following a dream
of an ideal City.
A walk in the interior of Sabbioneta, means immerging oneself
in a distant time, because almost everything has remained
unaltered.
Amongst the various buildings which face the normal road layout,
you can see the striking Ducal Palace built in 1568, with
the so called Gallery of the Ancestors, similar to a riding-school
and above all the architectural jewel in the form of the Olympic
Theatre, constructed by Vincenzo Scamozzi in 1590, and based
on a Palladian model.
