MUSEUMS
IN GUBBIO
Museo Civico (Civic
Museum):
the seat is in Palazzo dei Consoli, one of the most beautiful
pieces of Italian civil architecture built between 1332 and
1349. The ground floor areas are occupied by the Civic Musem,
whilst the Art Gallery can be found on the first floor. The
Civic Museum contains archaeological remains from the 19th
Century (those most recently acquired are conserved in the
Archaeological Section). The famous Eugubine tablets are conserved
here (in the ancient Chapel of the building): bronze slabs
with the Umbro alphabet, referring to the cults of the ancient
settlements. The Art Gallery area, on the upper floor, is
set out in chronological order and highlights local artistic
culture from the Medieval to the Baroque period.
Sezione Archeologica del Museo Civico (Archeaological Section
in the Civic Museum):
is established in the Consoli building, with access from Via
Gattapone, but will be unified with the other museum sections
in the future. The collection highlights the historical passage
through time of the territory; from the pre-historic to medieval
eras.
Museo di Palazzo Ducale (Ducal Palace Museum):
is situated in the Palazzo Ducale in front of the Cathedral
and was concluded in 1480. The palace was probably planned
and designed by Francesco di Giorgio Martini at the request
of Federico da Montefeltro. The museum collects furniture,
paintings and frescoes taken down from various places.
