SPELLO
Spello rises
on the road between Assisi
and Foligno, on a spur
of Monte Subasio.
It is fundamental stage of any passionate
history traveller for its treasures: the town-walls of Roman
age, the rests of the theatre and the amphitheater, the thermal
baths, the splendid Porta Venere, built during
Augusto's reignand perfectly conserved and the Augusto's
Arch. Of the later period to the fall of Rome it
remains the Church of San Severino, built
in VI century a.D.. The Middle Ages pass leaving to testify
it the Church of Saint Maria Maggiore (XII-XIV
sec.), embellished with frescoes by Pinturicchio
in the Baglioni Chapel and by Perugino on
the columns. While the age of Comuni is revealed in the duecentesco
Palazzo Comunale Vecchio in the Piazza della Repubblica which
keeps also a collection of archaeological materials.
Spello offers to its visitor also a rich collection of modern
art exposed to Fidelia Villa: works by Guttuso, Manzù
and Ligabue.
Spello is then famous for the event of the Infiorata
that happens every year in june. The roads and the public
squares are covered of compositions made with flowers and
vegetables that release pleasant scents in the city.
