MUSEUMS
IN AOSTA
Area Archeologica
(Archaeological Area):
can be entered through the archaeological area which represents
the ancient “Augusta Praetoria Salassorum” by
passing through the “Praetoria Gate” which signalled
the entrance of the Decuman into the City and which was the
most important of the City’s gateways along the ancient
defence wall – a wall which encloses the very archaeological
site. It’s still possible to recognize the typical area
sub-divisions: The area of the public buildings with the magnificent
theatre and what little remains of the amphitheatre; the area
of the springs; the forum area with its “plateau”
and finally the sacred areas containing the temples and arcaded
parts.
Museo del Tesoro della Cattedrale (Museum of the
Cathedral’s Treasures):
has been housed in the interior of the Cathedral itself, in
the deambulation area behind the main altar. It contains very
precious sacred objects, not only from the Cathedral but also
from other churches in the Valdostana area.
Museo Archeologico Regionale (Regional Archaeological
Museum):
faces the meridianal side of Piazza Roncas and occupies the
space of the ex Dame della Visitazione monastery and that
of the house of Vaudan. The museum dates back to 1929 but
the new museum came about in 1993, with the modern day chronological
route beginning in 2004. The new order of the pieces follows
the most up to date scientific discoveries and the works exhibited
regards the finds of ancient Augusta Praetoria and its territory.
On the ground floor the pieces cover the periods which run
from the Mesolithic (7/6000 BC) to the 7th Century AD. On
the earth sites instead, there’s an archaeological museum
area which can be followed under cover to visit some parts
of wall that have been uncovered by archaeological digs. There’s
also a notable numismatic collection connected to the museum.
