CASCIA
Cascia is
famous all over the world in order to have given birth to
Saint Rita, born in 1381. Every year the 21st and 22nd of
May take place the celebrations ritiane that
recall people from all the world.
Cascia, like all the centers of Umbria, has an ancient origin.
Founded before the birth of Rome it became then an important
Roman center. To testify this period it remains the splendid
temple of Villa S. Silvestro and more archaeological finds
are kept in the Museum of Palazzo Santi.
Cascia knew its period of maximum splendour during the Middle
Age and is for the architecture of this period that Cascia
becomes an art city: the Gotich churches of San Francesco
and Sant'Agostino, both built in the XIV
cent. To a previous period it belongs the collegiata
di Santa Maria, built by Longobards and subsequently
restored many times: its interior keeps a precious wooden
crucifix.
Cascia today, reveals a more modern face, having had to organize
the practicability and the management of the great flow of
pilgrims devout to Saint Rita.
