ORVIETO
Urbs Vetus,
that means old city, Latin name of Orvieto and, previously
Velzna, main center of the Etruscan civilization.
It rises on a vulcanic base that isolates it from the surrounding
territory giving evidence to all its particular fascination.
Its strategic position placed it in the centuries to the center
of feracious fights for the power: from the Etruscan age passing
for that Roman and subsequently under the Ghots domination,
until the civil wars between families of the same city: the
Monaldeschi and the Filippeschi. Orvieto receives the visitor
from a distance completely capturing his attention. The Duomo,
built in 1263 in obedience to Pope Urbano IV's wishes in order
to accommodate the "corporal" of the Miracle
of Bolsena, impressesfor the sumptuouos facade embellished
by the presence of mosaics, marble sculptures and the central
eye of rare beauty.
