L'AQUILA
There are numerous 16th Century
Palaces and monuments along the roads of the historical inhabited
centre, which come from the Baroque and neo-classical eras.
The Fountain of 99 blowpipes (constructed in 1272), is a characteristic
monument which was amplified later with a double basin, which
supplies water to 99 water jets), the memorable traditions
of the population are connected to the number of old squares
and “castles.”
The seat of the National Museum of Abruzzo, can be found in
the imposing 16th Castle, constructed by the Spanish.
L’Aquila is rich in cultural traditions and also boasts
the Academy of Beautiful Art, an established Theatre, a School
of Dramatic Culture, a Music Conservatory and a Centre for
Musical Studies named after Alfredo Casella, as well as in
1964, adding a Free University and Free University Institute
of Medicine and Surgery.
The Province of L’Aquila includes the high basins of
the Aterno and Sangro, the Marsica, the Gran Sasso, the National
Park of Abruzzo, highlands of the Cinquemiglia, and the Plains
of Sulmona. Tertiary activities are becoming notably developed
and most of all tourism (National Park of Abruzzo, Winter
Sport centres), thanks to the opening of the Gran Sasso Tunnel
(1984).
