NOCERA TERINESE

A few kilometres from the Tyrrhenian coast of Calabria in the province of Catanzaro is where one will come across Nocera Terinese, positioned on a slope with a beautiful view over the S. Eufemia Gulf.

History

The name Terinese comes from Piano della Tirena, where, according to recent studies, seems likely to be the spot where Témesa stood, an ancient Magna-Greek city situated in Crotone during the VI century BC. It was taken by Rome during 194 BC and disappeared during the High Medieval era.

Noukria also stood on the same place. It was an ancient Bruzi centre which was conquered by Hannibal (203 BC), then changed name to Nuceria.

A visit to the City

One should visit Nocera Terinese’s churches beginning with the Santa Maria Church, presumably built on the spot where a pagan temple dedicated to Bacco once stood.
The San Giovanni Battista Church, is also of ancient foundation, but reconstructed many times due to earthquakes. On the façade one can admire a statue of the saint dating back to the ‘600s. There are other noteworthy Baroque statues in its interior.

Not far away, one will come across the Annunziata Church, with a nave and a wooden sculpture depicting La Pietà (Mercy) from the ‘600s on its altar.
Ascending in the suburb, one will encounter the San Francesco of Assisi Church with a single nave.

In the Piano della Tirena locality, the remains of the walls which surrounded the village during the Hellenistic era of Témesa are still visible, along with the remains of a Roman aqueduct.

In the Pian delle Vigne locality, the remains of a Roman villa (I-II AD) came to light and is now seat of the Archaeological Communal Park.
