PALIZZI
Palizzi is a Medieval suburb near to the
southern coasts of Calabria, not too distant from the Aspromonte
National Park.
History
Its foundation is ancient. Its name in fact, derives from
Politzion, a Greek term meaning “small city.”
The Medieval fief was administered over the centuries by the
following families: Ruffo (XV century), Aragona d’Ayerbe,
Colonna (1580), Arduino (1654) and the De Blasio family (1784),
who ruled it until the subversion of feudalism.
A visit to the City
Palizzi is an evocative suburb capable of mesmerising its
visitor through the charm of its Medieval town planning crowned
by a rocky vertical wall, at the top of which lie the Castle
remains.
In the suburb, one can visit the S. Anna Church of ancient
foundation, which preserves a statue depicting the Saint,
dating back to the ‘500s, in its three-naved interior.
One must not forget to visit neighbouring Pietrapennata, immersed
in natural surroundings of great charm, and Palizzi Marina,
the seaside centre with its beautiful beach.
