SAN DEMETRIO CORONE
San Demetrio Corone is located in a panoramic
position on the Northern slopes of the Sila National
Park, which looks over the Valle del Crati.
History
Originally, the centre was known only by the name of Sandemitre,
but with the arrival of a community of Albanese refugees,
coming from Coron (end of XV century, in flight from Turkish
persecution, its name was completed and became San Demetrio
Corone.
Over time, San Demetrio Corone acquired more and more importance
for the Albanese community of Calabria, so much so, that in
1794 it became the seat of an Italo-Albanese College.
A visit to the City
The main monument in San Demetrio Corone, definitely one
of the most important in the region, is the S. Adriano Church
(‘XI century). It preserves interesting architectonic
elements in its interior, dating back to the Norman era; among
which we would like to point out the mosaic flooring.
One can also visit the San Nilo Grotto on its territory, which
contains frescoes, and is a place of quiet prayer to San Nilo
of Rossano (X century).
It is easy to reach the Sila National Park from San Demetrio
Corone, as well as some important centres like Acri, Luzzi
and Corigliano.
